Torrevieja salt lakes predate the thirteenth century and were an ancient royal possession.
Until 1802, Torrevieja existed only an old guard tower that gives the name to the place, and some cottages.
But in 1803, King Charles IV decreed the transfer of the management of the salt mines from La Mata to the location of the current core of Torrevieja, and authorized the construction of houses. In 1829, the town was totally destroyed by an earthquake and later rebuilt.
The production and sale of salt identified and organized life in this place, made in 1931 in city privilege granted by Alfonso XIII. Craft production was limited in the nineteenth century the manufacture of flax, hemp and cotton for popular consumption. Although difficult anchorage load of salt, the port is not finished building until 1954.
In the mid-nineteenth century, salt mining was addressed primarily through Swedish vessels and Holland. The national market for this product was mainly Galician and to a lesser extent, Valencian.
The importance of foreign trade of this product has been maintained during the twentieth century: a quarter of the salt produced is consumed in Spain and the rest is exported, and salt are the most important in Europe.
Torrevieja was also in the nineteenth century maritime outlet for agricultural production of the Vega Baja.
